A yeoman farmer is a class of landholding freemen farmer, ranked between the free peasants and the landed gentry. They typically own a plot of land, often an assart (cleared area in a woodlands) at the edge of the cultivated area. Most yeoman have servitors or laborers with whom they work the land.
The term yeoman can also apply to a certain class of servitor in the household of landowner or noble. They rank above the free peasants, but below the lord of the manor.
Yeoman are required by Ducal decree to own a sword, a dagger and a longbow, and to provide military service in times of war. Men-at-arms are often drawn from this class.
